Did you know that WSPD contains a portal into Kcymaerxthaere, a fictional parallel universe?

Sneak down to the lower level courtyard at 1198 (home to The Quinones Room and JCT. Kitchen’s patio), examine the back wall (near the utility meters), and you’ll find a secret placque placed by Eames Demetrios, Kcymaerxthaere’s Geographer-At-Large. This mysterious installation reads:

When the Tehachapi incised the Adalanta Desert with two great sphaltways, a settlement at their junction was inevitable. Martha Pelaski’s small trading post that became the great city was built here, grew fast, and saw many a fateful encounter. It was here that Nobunga-gaisen swore to help Alcibiades, that poet Yhgffyueo IUFyr (pronounced like a falling tree) first heard the False Cognate spoken and the great explorer Iglesia Guitierrez first met the tormented Sfawm Chd who would naively betray her with her Kulver self — born a continent away.

Similar (and similarly mysterious!) plaques can be found all over the world. Reporter Laura Kiniry stumbled across one outside The Arrow Bar in NYC’s East Village. “How many drunk patrons do you think have stood puzzling over this plaque at 2 a.m.?” her boyfriend asked her. For every “what the?!” that the markers receive, however, there will also be a few journeymen who’ll love to explore a bit more deeply. These worthy chosen ones will start their search with the web URL posted on the plaque, kcymaerxthaere.com. There they will find a complete list of markers (currently 92 in 20 countries), articles like the one Kiniry wrote, an online shop selling “exports” from Kcymaerxthaere, a map, a glossary and more.

Eames Demetrios (grandson of Charles and Ray Eames, whose classic chairs, photographs and films epitomize the the midcentury modern period) has created a project far grander than any ordinary art installation. Kcymaerxthaere is a global three-dimensional work of storytelling sure to surprise and delight those of us who grew up ensconced in the magical worlds of Madeleine L’Engle, J. R. R. Tolkien or J.K. This winter and spring, SCAD’s continuing education program will be offering two special four-week sessions highlighting contemporary art districts, including the Westside Arts District. Participants will explore various art galleries on Saturdays for four weeks.

SCAD Continuing Education: Exploring Atlanta Contemporary Art Districts
Saturdays, 1-4 p.m.
Price: $100 (Regular: $140)

Winter class: Begins Feb. 23 and ends March 16 (four weeks)
Spring class: Begins May 11 and ends June 1 (four weeks)

Participants experience the contemporary art scene of Atlanta by exploring Atlanta art galleries and heightening their awareness of the city’s cultural happenings. This Saturday afternoon class is perfect for interior designers, art critics, art history students, art educators, art enthusiasts and emerging artists. Participants become more familiar with local contemporary art by viewing exhibitions as a group in Atlanta galleries; they explore new neighborhoods and galleries and meet with gallery owners and staff. Each week, participants gain insight into how the various galleries define their roles, what they have to say about the art they are exhibiting, and their various approaches to curating art. Group discussions help the class reflect and explore new topics relating to artists’ strategies and their experiences. Participants meet in districts including Castleberry Hill, Inman Park/Midtown, The Westside Arts District and Buckhead. Gallery visits may include Poem88, Get This! Gallery, Sandler Hudson Gallery, Besharat Gallery, White Space, Alan Avery Gallery and Kai Lin Gallery, among others. Participants will meet in districts and should arrange their own transportation.

Introducing King + Duke

On February 7th, JCT. Chef-Owner Ford Fry previewed the menu for his newest restaurant concept, King + Duke, at City Grit in NYC. King + Duke is a Colonial American concept featuring wood-roasted meats prepared in what Ford Fry described to Eater, as a “primitive but exacting” colonial style prepared in a 24-foot wood-burning hearth.

King + Duke will make it’s Atlanta debut this March, but you can preview the talents of its head Chef Joseph Schafer when the Cochon555 Tour makes its Atlanta stop, February 17th at the Sheraton Atlanta Downtown. Cochon 555 pits 5 chefs, 5 pigs and 5 winemakers against each other in a nose-to-tail pork cooking contest. Twenty culinary luminaries will judge the competition, and one chef will be crowned the “Prince of Porc” and go on to compete in the Grand Cochon event at this year’s FOOD & WINE classic in Aspen.

Support Team Hidi!

On December 21st 2012 Ryan Hidinger, local chef, beloved member of Atlanta’s food community, husband to Jen of Seed Factory and proprietor of Staplehouse was pre-diagnosed with Gallbladder Cancer and then New Year’s Eve, it was confirmed that he has Stage IV Gallbladder Cancer that has spread to the liver and lungs. Now, Ryan is in for the fight of his life, and WSPD is doing its part to spread the word about the many “TEAM HIDI” fundraising events now on the books.

On February 9, JCT. Kitchen & Bar, No. 246 and The Optimist will all donate 5% of Saturday night’s sales during dinner service to TEAM HIDI.
